Over ninety years of history   A family company

Birds has been around for a while. As a family-run business we know how important our tradition has become. Everyday for the past ninety years our dedicated team of bakers has worked all hours of the day and night to fill our shelves with the products you love.

Since our founding in 1919, we have seen a lot of changes in the world around us. From horse and cart to diesel-efficient vehicles, the old wooden spoon to modern automated production lines, we as a company have grown with the times to become something truly unique.

As a modernizing business in a constantly changing world, there is always a risk that quality and tradition can be lost in the pursuit of efficiency. Not us: we strive to maintain the same traditional baking techniques we have been using for almost a century.

Birds the Confectioners was founded by three brothers; Frank, Thomas and Reginald Bird in 1919. The company was later passed on to their sons, the last of the founder members passing away in 1951.

Paul Bird, the second generation pioneer, expanded the company considerably while maintaining the quality of our products.

Currently the company is run by the third generation, Patrick and Nicholas Bird, with the fourth generation responsible for this website. Having just opened our 54th store in the East Midlands, we've certainly grown over the years.

Our product range has naturally flourished as well. Not only can you still get all the Birds cream cakes and confectionery you've always loved, but we now also offer a range of take-away lunch foods, coffees and sandwiches, all under our expresso range.

Building a team of dedicated bakers

Everything we make is as fresh as it gets

Since our founding in 1919, we have built up a team of truly dedicated staff. Not only do we all work around the clock to make sure quality and tradition remain core values in our work force, but we also pioneer new techniques to make sure your satisfaction is continually guaranteed. Coupling tradition with innovation, we aim to lead the way in both high quality and excellent consumer value with all of our goods.

We certainly have a history in the East Midlands area. As a matter of fact, we've been here for almost a century. We have learned a lot over the years and we have put our knowledge to use in changing the way we work. We currently operate 1 bakery on Ascot Drive in Derby and supply all of our retail outlets with fresh produce every day. We work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make sure everything you buy in any of our stores is as fresh as it gets, and that's a promise.
